Nouns and their types




Noun
: A word which names a person, place, object, animal or an idea is called a noun. Example:

Person: Max, Andy, Tom, Sarah, Julie etc.
Place: Canada, School, Store, India, London etc.
Object: Home, Car, Bus, Table, Chair etc.
Animal: Dog, Cow, Rat, Rabbit, Cat etc.
Idea: Happiness, Devotion, Faith, Kindness, Superstition etc.

Types of Nouns: there are following 8 types of nouns:
(1) Common Noun (2) Proper Noun (3) Non-countable Noun (4) Countable Noun

(5) Abstract Noun (6) Concrete Noun (7) Collective Noun (8) Compound Noun

(1) Common Noun: A name used for non-specific person, animal, place, object or idea. These nouns are used for a class of person, place, animal, object or idea, such as teacher, boy, girl, car, toy, dog, cat, city, country etc.

(2) Proper Noun: Proper noun is a name which refers to a specific person, animal, place, object or idea, such as Tom, Jack, Kitty, Garfield, Blacky, Canada, England, Samsung, Apple, Toshiba, etc. A proper noun always starts with a capital letter.

(3) Non-countable Noun: The nouns that cannot be counted are called non-countable nouns such as water, gas, oil, air, milk, rice, sand etc.

(4) Countable Noun: The nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns, such as chair, table, dog, horses, men, car etc. Countable nouns have singular and plural form and they can take an article like a, an, the.

(5) Abstract Noun: A noun that refers to the things which we can’t see or touch, we cannot experience these nouns with our five senses (see, touch, hear, smell, taste) such as truth, happiness, lies, friendship, love etc. abstract nouns can be countable or non-countable.

(6) Concrete Noun: A noun that refers to the things which we can see or touch, we can experience these nouns with our five senses (see, touch, hear, smell, taste) such as water, money, chair, table, bat, ball, car, bus etc.

(7) Collective Noun: A collective noun is the word used to represent a group of people, animals or things such as flock, crowd, gang, team, herd etc.

(8) Compound Noun: Compound nouns are words for people, animals, places, things, or ideas, made up of two or more words such as bus stop, fireflies, six-pack, blackboard, swimming pool, baby-sitter etc.

(1) Open Compound Nouns: The compound nouns which are made up of two words having space between them. Example: bath tub, full moon, ice cream, living room etc.

(2) Closed Compound Noun: The compound nouns made up from two words combines as one word (having no space between them). Example: classmate (class + mate), greenhouse (green + house), eyelid (eye + lid), lifespan (life + span) etc.

(3) Hyphenated Compound Nouns: The compound nouns which are made up of two (or more) words separated with a hyphen (-). Example: baby-sitter, self-confidence, check-up, dry-cleaning, mother-in-law etc.
